Our new secondary school is open and full of hundreds of excited students
The new secondary school- The Centre of Opportunity, was completed in 2022 and opened in January 2023. The school is designed to compliment the curriculum with an open modern design where students can learn in traditional classrooms as well as having access to innovative, collaborative spaces. As well as the academic classes, we have a music studio, art studio, English classroom and a computer lab complete with programming equipment. Our goal is to inspire these young adults to be responsible for their own future, to be prepared to find employment upon graduation, to continue their studies at university or open their own business. The curriculum is designed around project based learning where they practise working effectively in a group. They learn to isolate a problem in their lives or community and design a program to overcome the initial problem. To supplement the academic education the students choose to participate in our sports program, music program, computer programming, cooking/baking seminars, filmmaking, dance and the English club.

COVID-19 Updates
These are challenging times for everyone. The teachers and team at Los Patojos are doing everything possible to ensure our students and families are safe, healthy and have enough food on their tables.
We are continuing education at a distance where possible, using WhatsApp, and homework envelopes. Food packets are being delivered to over 110 families who have lost their income. In addition, with the help of a local women’s’ organization, we are able to provide medical attention to those in need. Now more than ever, our community needs us – and we need you.

Meet the Founder of El Patojismo
While working as a teacher in Guatemala, Juan Pablo Romero Fuentes saw his students struggling with many issues that his own generation had faced, including drug abuse and gangs. At the age of 23, he turned part of his family’s home into a community center and started El Patojismo, a nonprofit that has become a haven for children and youth.
In 2014, he was named a CNN Hero for his ongoing impact on the community.
